The Bulger List

The Bulger List was the brain child of a group of mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts in the 1970 who aspired towards a new challenge. So in 1976 when the last of the topographical USGS maps for the state of Washington came out the group identified the top one hundred highest and formed what is now called 'The Bulger List'. The Bulger List specifically identifies the list as one of many variations to the 'hundred highest list'. You may wonder how there can be variations and for the most part it stems from what one determines constitutes a mountain. The Bulger List rules are as follows:

Rule 1: An individual summit has to rise at least 400 feet above the surrounding terrain. The distinction looks right in the field and can be clearly determined from maps with 40, 80 and 100 foot contour intervals.

Rule 2: A peak with an official USGS-approved name will be considered for inclusion even if it fails the 400 foot rule.

Rule 3: An 800 foot rule applies to major volcanoes. This rule avoids counting Columbia Crest and Liberty Cap on Rainier as two separate mountains. Little Tahoma is the only volcanic sub-summit with Big Boy status

Now there is another group, which identify themselves as 'The Clean Prominence List', that have taken a more strict and scientific approach to the list. Armed with new tools to measure altimeters and GPS they have updated some of the elevations listed for some peaks to more current and accurate readings, thus changing their placement on the list and wehther or not they belong on this new updated version. Additionally, peaks that were named on the original maps were used regardless of whether or not they had 400 feet of clean prominenece. The Clean Prominence List did away with those and used only peaks that had strictly 400ft of clean prominence regardless
